Una serie di statue coloratissime e mascherate, tutte diverse, tutte con una forte personalità, ma celate da una maschera, una maschera che gli copre il volto. Cosa c’è sotto? Cosa vi è celato? Questo non è dato saperlo, con una maschera siamo tutti uguali, ma anche tutti diversi. Infatti questi ornamenti non sono fissi, ma mobili, possono essere cambiati a seconda delle situazioni, dei gusti e degli stati d’animo. Queste opere incarnano il concetto della maschera Pirandelliana, seconda il quale la maschera non è altro che una mistificazione, simbolo alienante, indice della spersonalizzazione e della frantumazione dell’io in identità molteplici. I nostri Zuki cosi allo stesso modo reagisco al mondo esterno, si colorano, ridono, urlano e fanno le smorfie, quasi a voler ridere del contemporaneo, in una sorta di esorcizzazione. Sculture che sfidano i dolori e le preoccupazioni della vita. Così mettono la maschera, la accettano e la mistificano. Gli Zuki sono feticci che cercano di glorificare, in modo sarcastico, l’uomo contemporaneo, il quale si nasconde dietro una “maschera”, un velo di Maya che non consente di conoscere la propria personalità. Nella realtà quotidiana gli individui non si mostrano mai per quello che sono, ma assumono una maschera che li rende personaggi e non li rivela come persone. Lo Zuki è scultura fondamentale per l’uomo, per prendere spunto e forza e affrontare il mondo.

A series of colourful and masked statues, all different, all with a strong personality, but hidden by a mask that covers their faces. What’s hidden there? No one knows. With a mask we all are the same, but all different too. In fact, these ornaments are not fixed and can be changed according to situations, taste and moods. These works embody the concept of the Pirandellian mask, that is nothing but a mystification, an alienating symbol, a symptom/indication of the depersonalization and shattering of the ego into multiple identities. In the same way our Zukis react to the outer world, they get coloured, they laugh, scream and pull faces, in a sort of exorcization. Sculptures that challenge life’s sorrows and worries. Therefore they put on a mask, accept life then mystify it. The Zukis are fetishes that, in a sarcastic way, try to glorify the contemporary man, who hides behind a “mask”, a veil of Maya that doesn’t allow anyone to know its own personality. In everyday reality, individuals never show themselves for what they are; they rather put on a mask that turns them into characters and does not reveal them as people. The Zuki is a fundamental sculpture for man, to take inspiration and strength and face the world.

è l’installazione site specific che Andrea De Ranieri presenta all’azienda vinicola la Suveraia. Tutti noi oggi siamo più che mai ossessionati dall’omologazione, dall’essere belli e perfetti per questa società. Siamo ossessionati dall’accettazione. Questo il problema che vuole affrontare Andrea de Ranieri all’interno della sua opera. L’intero gruppo di Zuki, le statue mascherate, prende vita partenendo da un personaggio senza un braccio, monco, mutilato, che quindi mal si integra con gli altri, con i “normali”. Questo piccolo soggetto però è colorato, divertente e mascherato e i suoi colori contagiano tutti coloro che gli stanno intorno. Tutte le statue che lo circondino sono uguali, si diversificano solamente da netti stereotipi di genere. Sembrano fatte con lo stampino. Il nostro Zuki anormale però riesce a contagiarle con i suoi colori e la sua maschera. Ed ecco che prende vita l’intera installazione. Un gruppo di coloratissimi personaggi si espande sulla parete, con toni, forme, decori ed espressioni diverse. Nonostante l’omologazione della forma tutte riescono a esprimere la loro personalità, la loro fragilità e la loro forza. L’anormale contamina i suoi vicini, istaurando un diverso canone di normalità. Un piccolo passo, per rompere le barriere del qualunquismo comune e riuscire finalmente ad esprimere sé stessi. Solamente partendo dalle piccole cose riusciremo a cambiare.

Abnormal is the new normal is the site-specific installation that Andrea De Ranieri introduces at the wine company La Suveraia. Nowadays, more than ever, we are all obsessed with homogenisation, with being good-looking and perfect for this society. We are obsessed with acceptance. This is the problem that De Ranieri wants to deal with inside his work. The whole group of Zuki, the masked statues, come alive setting out from a one-armed character, crippled, mutilated, that therefore badly integrates with the others, the “normal”. This tiny subject, though, is coloured, amusing and masked, and its colours contaminate all those around it. All the statues that surround it are the same; they only differentiate according to neat gender stereotypes. They seem to have been made with a mould. Our ordinary Zuki, though, manages to contaminate them with its colours and its mask. And here is the whole installation coming alive. A group of lively-coloured characters spread on the wall, with different tones, shapes, trimmings and expressions. Despite the homogenisation of the shape, all of them manage to express their personality, fragility and their strength. The abnormal one contaminates his neighbours, setting a new criterion of normality. A small step, to break through the barriers of political indifference, and to finally manage to express oneself. We will only be able to change by starting from small things.
